This was one of the earlier pictures I took with my brand new digital camera. These aren't real oranges, they're candles.

hey - those candles are pretty good oranges. - nothing like a new camera to get us motivated to take photos! I agree it is not too sharp but likely because your shutter was 1/5 second at 24mm which will result in some camera shake.
In case you didn't know the rule ... your shutter should alway be faster than 1/FOCALLENGTH so with a 24mm lens you should be shooting at 1/25" or faster to avoid camera shake blur.
Canon IS lenses let you shoot a little slower than this without shake.
